BCL-XL은 BCL-2 단백질 패밀리에 속하며, 세포 사멸(apoptosis)을 조절하는 항-또는 친-사멸 단백질로 작용합니다.
이 단백질은 미토콘드리아 외막에 위치하며, 미토콘드리아 외막 채널(VDAC)의 개방을 조절합니다.
VDAC는 미토콘드리아 막 전위, 활성산소 생성, 그리고 시토크롬 C 방출을 조절하여 세포 사멸 유도에 관여합니다.
두 가지 상이한 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되었으며, 긴 형태는 세포 사멸 억제, 짧은 형태는 세포 사멸 촉진 기능을 가집니다.
