CAD encodes a trifunctional protein that catalyzes the first three enzymatic steps of pyrimidine biosynthesis: carbamoylphosphate synthetase (CPS II), aspartate transcarbamoylase, and dihydroorotase.
This protein is regulated by the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade, linking MAPK activation directly to pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis.
