Target Information

ATRX encodes a protein containing an ATPase/helicase domain, belonging to the SWI/SNF family of chromatin remodeling proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) often accompanied by alpha-thalassemia (ATRX) syndrome. These mutations can alter DNA methylation patterns, linking chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, and gene expression in development. The protein undergoes cell cycle-dependent phosphorylation, regulating its nuclear matrix and chromatin association, suggesting roles in gene regulation and chromosomal segregation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been reported.
