Target Information

IKBKE (IKK epsilon) is an activator of nuclear factor-kappa-B (NF-κB). Overexpression of IKBKE has been observed in breast cancer cells, and suppression of IKBKE induces cell death.
NF-κB is a ubiquitous transcription factor and an essential mediator of gene expression during immune and inflammatory responses. It mediates the expression of various genes in response to extracellular stimuli and is associated with Ikappa-B proteins in the cytoplasm, which inhibit NF-κB activity.
Ikappa-B is phosphorylated by the IKK complex containing IKK-α, IKK-β, and IKK-γ. A novel molecule in this complex, IKK-iota/IKK-i, was identified and shown to be required for NF-κB activation by PMA and T cell receptors but not by TNF-α and IL-1. IKK-iota/IKK-i expression is inducible by TNF-α, IL-1, and LPS.
