Target Information
Component of the Polycomb group (PcG) multiprotein PRC1 complex, required to maintain transcriptional repression of many genes, including Hox genes, during development. The PRC1 complex acts through chromatin remodeling and histone modification, mediating monoubiquitination of histone H2A at Lys-119, leading to heritable changes in chromatin expressibility. Within PRC1, BMI-1 is essential for stimulating the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase activity of RNF2/RING2.
