Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) exhibits a high degree of tissue specificity, being predominantly expressed in all muscle cell types (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle). Its expression is regulated in a stage- and tissue-specific manner, induced during terminal differentiation of skeletal muscle cells. In skeletal and cardiac muscle, desmin localizes to the Z-disk and intercalated disk regions. Expression in smooth muscle is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin is observed in muscle-derived tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas. Altered desmin distribution has been noted in myocardial dysfunction.
