Collagen IV is a key structural protein forming the basement membrane in tissues such as kidneys, lungs, and skin. It provides mechanical support and stability through its network-like structure composed of three alpha chains encoded by COL4A1, COL4A2, and COL4A3 genes. Mutations in these genes are associated with disorders like Alport syndrome and Goodpasture syndrome, affecting kidney and lung function.
