Target Information

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by addition of the telomere repeat TTAGGG. The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity, encoded by the TERT gene, and an RNA component serving as a template for telomere repeat synthesis. Telomerase expression is repressed in most postnatal somatic cells, leading to telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Deregulation of telomerase may contribute to oncogenesis. In mice, telomerase has been implicated in chromosomal repair via de novo synthesis of telomere repeats at double-stranded breaks. Alternative splicing of TERT produces multiple isoforms, some of which remain incompletely characterized.
