Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the paired box (PAX) family of transcription factors. These proteins typically contain a paired box domain, an octapeptide, and a paired-type homeodomain. PAX8 is a nuclear protein involved in thyroid follicular cell development and regulation of thyroid-specific gene expression. Mutations in this gene are associated with thyroid dysgenesis, follicular carcinomas, and atypical follicular adenomas. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
