TRIM5 alpha 단백질은 tripartite motif(TRIM) 패밀리에 속하며, RING, B-box type 1, B-box type 2, coiled-coil 영역을 포함한 세 가지 zinc-binding 도메인을 가집니다. 이 단백질은 coiled-coil 영역을 통해 homo-oligomer를 형성하고 세포질 내 body에 위치합니다. E3 ubiquitin-ligase로 작용하여 자기 유비퀴틴화를 통해 세포 내 위치를 조절하며, 레트로바이러스 제한에 관여할 수 있습니다. 다양한 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
