Target Information

The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays a crucial role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.

Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by enzymes such as glycogen synthase kinase 3, cyclin-dependent kinase, ERK2, and JNK is associated with cell proliferation and cycle regulation. Studies indicate c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development.

The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation. Deregulated expression can induce apoptosis in multiple cell types. Antibodies against c-myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to amino or carboxy termini of target proteins.

c-Myc-, N-Myc-, and L-Myc-encoded proteins are involved in cell proliferation and neoplastic diseases. Amplification of the c-Myc gene is found in human tumors such as lung, breast, and colon carcinomas, while N-Myc amplification is common in neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative conditions.

Aberrant expression of the c-myc gene occurs in tumors of diverse origins including colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
