Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme defending against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into hydrogen peroxide, which is further converted into water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.

- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Cytosolic enzyme found in all eukaryotes
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme, tetrameric 80 kDa, located in the matrix near the respiratory chain
