M2A1 항체는 인간 적혈구의 M 항원에 특이적으로 결합하며, N 항원에는 반응하지 않습니다. 이 항체의 에피토프는 glycophorin A의 아미노 말단 세린 잔기와 시알산 잔기를 포함합니다. M2A1의 M 항원 반응성은 pH 및 염 농도에 따라 달라지며 최적 pH는 약 8–9입니다. 혈액형 항원 M은 적혈구의 주요 시알로글리코프로틴인 glycophorin A에 위치합니다.

CD235a (Glycophorin A, GPA)는 성숙 적혈구 및 적혈구 전구세포에서 발현되는 단일 막 관통 시알로글리코프로틴입니다. CD235a는 혈액형 M 및 N 특이성을 운반하며, 세포 융합을 방지하고 적혈구 응집을 최소화하는 점액질 장벽 역할을 합니다. 또한 Sandei virus, parvovirus, Streptococcus adhesin Hsa의 수용체로 작용하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
