Target Information

The proton-coupled peptide transporter (PEPT) in the mammalian small intestine is responsible for absorbing small peptides from dietary protein digestion.
PEPT1 (SLC15A1) is a hydrogen ion/peptide cotransporter that transports dipeptides and tripeptides, but not free amino acids or peptides longer than three residues.
Its activity depends on proton binding and an inside-negative membrane potential.
PEPT1 is a 708-amino-acid protein with 12 predicted membrane-spanning domains and is expressed in Caco-2 cells.
It plays important roles in nutritional and pharmacological therapies.
The mammalian kidney expresses a related transporter, PEPT2, which facilitates absorption of small peptides and peptide-like drugs such as beta-lactam antibiotics from the tubular filtrate.
