Target Information
Nrl (neural retina leucine zipper) is a member of the Maf family of transcription factors, characterized by a basic leucine zipper (bZIP)-DNA binding motif. Both Nrl and c-Maf preferentially bind to T-MARE sites and play roles in developmental and physiological processes. The Maf-Nrl subfamily regulates expression of cell type-specific genes in hematopoietic tissues, cerebellum, and developing hindbrain. Nrl promotes rhodopsin expression in retinal cells by binding to the Nrl response element in the rhodopsin promoter. It is expressed during neuronal differentiation and later restricted to neocortex, brainstem, and retinal neurons.
