Target Information
Gap junctions allow the transport of ions and metabolites between the cytoplasm of adjacent cells. They are formed by two hemichannels, each composed of six connexin proteins. Each connexin has four transmembrane segments, two extracellular loops, a cytoplasmic loop between the inner transmembrane segments, and both N- and C-termini located in the cytoplasm. The specificity of the gap junction depends on the connexin proteins forming the hemichannel. Connexin naming has evolved from molecular weight-based to a sequential numbering system. Mutations in the connexin 30 gene have been associated with certain forms of deafness and hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.
