Target Information
Bmi1 is a component of the Polycomb group (PcG) multiprotein PRC1 complex, which maintains the transcriptionally repressive state of numerous developmental genes, including Hox genes. The PRC1 complex acts through chromatin remodeling and histone modification, mediating monoubiquitination of histone H2A at Lys-119, leading to heritable changes in chromatin expressibility. Within the complex, Bmi1 is essential for stimulating the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase activity of RNF2/RING2.
