Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, analogous to a prokaryotic protein that organizes the 3′ domain of 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes of this gene exist on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
