Target Information
AGP (α1-acid Glycoprotein) is an acute phase plasma protein synthesized by the liver. It regulates interactions between blood and endothelial cells and mediates cell extravasation during infection and inflammation, along with haptoglobin and C-reactive protein. Expression is induced by acute-phase stimulatory agents such as bacterial lipopolysaccharides.
AGP binds basic drugs with high affinity and low capacity at physiological pH. In human plasma, AGP levels range from 0.5–1.4 mg/mL and increase during acute inflammation, making it a useful marker for inflammatory conditions. Multiple AGP genes exist (AGP-1, AGP-2, AGP-3, AGP-8). AGP-1 and AGP-2 contain five and six potential N-glycosylation sites, respectively. Abnormal expression of AGP-1 is linked to sarcoidosis and other immunogenetic diseases, while AGP-2 mutations are associated with various carcinomas.
