Target Information
NeuroD1 is a transcriptional activator functioning as a differentiation factor during neurogenesis. It binds to the insulin gene E-box and requires dimerization with another basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) protein for efficient DNA binding. Defects in NEUROD1 are associated with maturity onset diabetes of the young type VI (MODY6), a non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus with autosomal dominant inheritance, onset in young adulthood, and a primary defect in insulin secretion.
