Androgen receptor(AR) 유전자는 약 90 kb 길이로, N-말단 도메인, DNA 결합 도메인, 안드로겐 결합 도메인 등 세 가지 주요 기능 도메인을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 스테로이드 호르몬에 의해 활성화되는 전사 인자로 작용하며, 호르몬 결합 후 핵으로 이동하여 이합체를 형성하고 안드로겐 반응 유전자의 전사를 촉진합니다.
이 유전자는 폴리글루타민(polyglutamine) 및 폴리글리신(polyglycine) 반복 서열을 포함하며, 폴리글루타민 반복이 비정상적으로 확장될 경우 척수연수근위축증(SBMA, Kennedy’s disease)을 유발할 수 있습니다. 또한 변이는 완전 안드로겐 불감증(CAIS)과도 관련이 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 인해 여러 전사체 변이체가 생성됩니다.
