Target Information
Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a 20 kDa protein belonging to the IL-6 receptor family. It binds to a heterodimeric membrane receptor composed of the LIF-specific subunit gp190 (LIFR) and gp130, which is shared with other IL-6 family members.
LIF expression is found in various tissues including thymus, lung, and neuronal tissue. It can be up-regulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNFα and IL-17. Elevated levels have been observed in rheumatoid arthritis, neural injury, systemic inflammation, and tuberculosis.
LIF is known for its ability to inhibit differentiation of embryonic stem cells in mice and promote stem cell self-renewal. Human and mouse LIF share 79% sequence homology and exhibit cross-species activity, though stem cell differentiation inhibition appears mouse-specific.
