Target Information
The SURF-1 protein plays a crucial role in the assembly of complex IV (CIV or COX) of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. It is localized in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Mutations in the SURF-1 gene are associated with cytochrome c oxidase complex IV deficiency, leading to Leigh syndrome — a severe neurological disorder characterized by necrotic lesions in subcortical brain regions. SURF-1 mutations also correlate with embryonic lethality, early-onset mortality, and muscle and motor performance deficits. Morphological abnormalities in heart, brain, and skeletal muscle are frequently observed due to SURF-1 dysfunction.
