Target Information

Catenin alpha-1 associates with the cytoplasmic domain of various cadherins. The catenin–cadherin complex is linked to the actin filament network, playing a critical role in cell adhesion. It can associate with both E- and N-cadherins.
Originally thought to mediate linkage of cadherins to the actin cytoskeleton at adherens junctions, later studies suggest it does not bind directly to F-actin within the complex, implying a different linkage mechanism.
The homodimeric form may regulate actin filament assembly and inhibit branching by competing with the Arp2/3 complex for actin binding. It plays an important role in cell differentiation.
