Versican은 aggrecan, brevican, neurocan 등을 포함하는 대형 응집성 프로테오글리칸 계열 단백질의 구성원입니다. 섬유성, 관절성, 탄성 연골뿐 아니라 신경, 표피, 동맥, 느슨한 결합 조직 등 다양한 조직에 분포합니다. Versican V1은 세포 증식을 촉진하고 세포 변형을 유도하며, proapoptotic Bad의 발현을 억제하여 세포를 apoptosis로부터 보호하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 호흡기 상피세포의 세포외기질 단백질로 존재하여 천식 환자에서 염증 관련 역할을 하는 것으로 보고되었습니다.
