Target Information
Steroid receptors are ligand-dependent intracellular proteins that regulate transcription of specific genes by binding to DNA sequences upon hormone activation. Before activation, steroid receptors form complexes with various proteins such as heat shock proteins (HSP70, HSP90), immunophilins (FKBP52, FKBP54, CyP-40), and other proteins including p23, p60, and p48.
p23, along with HSP70, HSP90, and p60, interacts with the progesterone receptor (PR) as part of a transient intermediate complex. The cloned human p23 encodes a 160-amino-acid protein conserved across species, characterized as an acidic phosphoprotein with multiple phosphorylation sites. It binds HSP90 and facilitates HSP90–CyP-40–PR interactions, playing an important role in PR function.
