Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of MyoD (human homolog is myf3) in various normal and neoplastic cells can induce muscle cell conversion or activate transcriptionally silent muscle-specific genes.
The regulatory domain of the MyoD protein includes a 70 amino acid region with a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif.
Other genes sharing homology in the basic HLH domain include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4, herculin).
