Target Information
Alpha Tubulin is a component of the heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta tubulin subunits, each approximately 55 kDa. These tubulins are homologous but not identical and form the basic building block of microtubules—cylindrical filamentous structures present in almost all eukaryotic cells. Microtubules provide structural support, serve as intracellular transport tracks, and play essential roles in mitosis. Gamma tubulin is critical for microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes are highly conserved among species. The alpha tubulin gene shows high similarity to mouse and rat Tuba1. Expression is predominantly found in differentiated neurologic cells based on Northern blot studies.
