Target Information
Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP), also known as Amyloid beta precursor protein, functions as a cell surface kinesin I membrane receptor mediating axonal transport of beta-secretase and presenilin 1.
APP plays a key role in:
- Neurite growth
- Neuronal adhesion
- Axonogenesis
APP is a 100–140 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein existing as multiple isoforms via alternative splicing. Proteolytic cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretases generates beta amyloid, the major component of senile plaques — a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.
Abnormal APP processing is associated with Down’s syndrome, early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebral hemorrhage.
