Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is the fifth component of complement (C5), which plays an essential role in inflammatory and cell killing processes.
It consists of alpha and beta chains linked by a disulfide bridge. Upon activation, C5 is cleaved into C5a and C5b fragments.
- C5a: An anaphylatoxin with potent spasmogenic and chemotactic activity.
- C5b: Forms a complex with C6 to initiate the membrane attack complex (MAC) formation.
Mutations in this gene may lead to complement component 5 deficiency, resulting in susceptibility to recurrent infections.
Defects have also been associated with liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
