HMGB2는 비히스톤 염색체 단백질군에 속하는 고이동성 그룹 단백질을 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 염색질과 결합하며 고등 진핵세포의 핵 내에 널리 분포합니다. In vitro 연구에서 HMGB2는 DNA를 효율적으로 굽히고 DNA 원형 구조를 형성할 수 있음이 확인되었습니다. 이러한 특성은 DNA 유연성을 촉진하여 cis-acting 단백질 간의 협력적 상호작용을 돕는 역할을 시사합니다. 또한 DNA 이중 가닥 절단 복구 및 V(D)J 재조합 과정의 최종 연결 단계에도 관여하는 것으로 보고되었습니다.
