Target Information
This gene encodes one of two high-affinity forms of a receptor for melatonin, the primary hormone secreted by the pineal gland.
The receptor is a G-protein coupled, 7-transmembrane receptor responsible for melatonin effects on mammalian circadian rhythm and reproductive alterations affected by day length.
It is an integral membrane protein localized to two brain regions:
- The hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (involved in circadian rhythm)
- The hypophysial pars tuberalis (associated with reproductive effects of melatonin)
