Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) belongs to the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones involved in growth control. The GH1 gene, along with four related genes, is located at the growth hormone locus on chromosome 17, sharing high sequence identity. Alternative splicing yields five isoforms (19–24 kDa). hGH is produced by pituitary somatotroph cells and acts via cytokine receptor subfamily membrane receptors. It promotes body growth by stimulating the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, enhances myoblast differentiation and proliferation, and increases amino acid uptake and protein synthesis. Mutations or deletions in GH1 can lead to growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
