Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is crucial for the development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis) and also affects nonreproductive tissues such as muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
Abnormalities in AR signaling are linked to diseases including prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations can cause complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS).
