Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon hormone binding, the receptor translocates to the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is essential for development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis) and also plays roles in muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It regulates MAP kinase activity, and MEK1/2 pathway inhibition correlates with AR phosphorylation changes. Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in this gene can cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
