The Anti-human Galectin-3 (M3/38) antibody recognizes an epitope in the N-terminal half of lectin. Galectins are a family of animal lectins with various biological functions. Galectin-3 (LGALS3, Mac-2, L-29) is a 30 kDa beta-galactoside-binding protein that binds IgE and mammalian cell surfaces when homodimerized or homo-oligomerized. It is distributed in epithelial tissues and inflammatory cells such as macrophages, dendritic cells, and Kupffer cells. Expression is upregulated during inflammation, proliferation, differentiation, and viral trans-activation.

Target Information
Galectin-3 is a galactose-specific lectin that binds IgE and may mediate endothelial cell migration via alpha-3, beta-1 integrin interaction. Together with DMBT1, it is required for terminal differentiation of columnar epithelial cells during early embryogenesis. In the nucleus, it functions as a pre-mRNA splicing factor and plays roles in acute inflammatory responses including neutrophil activation, monocyte chemoattraction, macrophage activation, opsonization of apoptotic neutrophils, and mast cell activation.
