Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. This family includes large groups of growth and differentiation factors. BMPs were originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo at extraskeletal sites. BMP4 plays a crucial role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression has been linked to bone diseases such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in three variants, all encoding the same protein.
