Target Information

Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class, which functions in detoxification of electrophilic compounds such as carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products by conjugation with glutathione.
Genes encoding mu class enzymes are organized in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic. These variations can influence susceptibility to carcinogens and toxins, as well as drug toxicity and efficacy.
Null mutations of this gene have been linked to increased cancer risk due to heightened sensitivity to environmental toxins. Multiple protein isoforms are encoded by transcript variants.
