Target Information

Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase belonging to the mu class, functioning in detoxification of electrophilic compounds including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products via conjugation with glutathione.
The mu class genes are organized in a cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic, affecting susceptibility to carcinogens and drug response. Null mutations in this gene class have been linked to increased cancer risk due to heightened sensitivity to environmental toxins and carcinogens. Multiple protein isoforms are encoded by transcript variants of this gene.
