Target Information
The sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) helps maintain intracellular calcium levels in cardiac and skeletal muscle by storing and releasing calcium. Calsequestrin is a calcium-binding protein that sequesters calcium in the sarcoplasmic reticulum during muscle relaxation. It is localized to the junctional and corbular SR and functions to localize calcium near the terminal cisternae, allowing release into the cytosol via the ryanodine receptor. This protein is highly acidic, with a large capacity and moderate-to-low affinity for calcium.
