Target Information
Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal development. In adults, AFP expression is commonly associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence can occur without pathology. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, with both genes located tandemly on chromosome 4. It exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels are used in amniotic fluid testing for spina bifida and anencephaly screening. Elevated serum AFP is observed in hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
