Product Specific Information

  • Stability: Antibody is stable for 24 months.
  • Positive Control: Human fetal liver or hepatocellular carcinoma tissue.
  • Cellular Localization: Cytoplasm.
  • Specificity Comments:
Recognizes an oncofetal glycoprotein (70 kDa) identified as alpha fetoprotein (AFP). This monoclonal antibody is highly specific to AFP and shows no cross-reactivity with other oncofetal antigens or serum albumin. AFP is produced by the yolk sac and liver during fetal life. In adults, AFP expression is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence of AFP may occur in healthy individuals. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, with both genes located tandemly on chromosome 4. AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms, and binds copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used clinically to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly.

Target Information

Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal development. In adults, elevated AFP levels are often associated with hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms. AFP functions as the fetal analog of serum albumin, with both genes arranged in tandem on chromosome 4. AFP can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin, and exists as monomers, dimers, and trimers. Measurement of AFP in amniotic fluid is also used to assess fetal neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly.
