Target Information
Histones are essential for transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression, and development. Histone acetylation and deacetylation modify chromatin structure and affect transcription factor access to DNA. HDAC5 belongs to the class II histone deacetylase family, exhibiting deacetylase activity and repressing transcription when tethered to promoters. It interacts with HDAC3 and MEF2 proteins, influencing MEF2-dependent gene expression and potentially associated with colon cancer. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
