Target Information

Phosphorylation of serine residues on the I-kappa-B proteins by IKK kinases, including IKBKB, marks them for destruction via the ubiquitination pathway, allowing activation of the NF-kappa-B complex.
IKK beta (Inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase subunit beta) is a serine kinase essential in NF-kappa-B signaling, activated by inflammatory cytokines, bacterial or viral products, DNA damage, or other cellular stresses.
It functions within the canonical IKK complex, phosphorylating inhibitors of NF-kappa-B on two critical serine residues, leading to their polyubiquitination and degradation. This releases NF-kappa-B, which translocates to the nucleus to activate genes involved in immune response, growth control, and protection against apoptosis.
Mutations in the IKK beta gene can cause Immunodeficiency 15 (IMD15).
