BCL-XL은 BCL-2 단백질 패밀리에 속하며, 다양한 세포 활동에 관여하는 항-또는 친-세포사멸 조절자로 작용합니다.
BCL-XL은 외부 미토콘드리아막에 위치하며, VDAC(Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel)의 개폐를 조절합니다.
VDAC는 미토콘드리아 막 전위, 활성산소 생성 및 시토크롬 C 방출을 조절하여 세포사멸 유도에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
두 가지 스플라이싱 전사 변이가 보고되었으며, 긴 형태는 세포사멸 억제자로, 짧은 형태는 세포사멸 촉진자로 작용합니다.
