Target Information
Estrogen Receptors (ER) are members of the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors.
The estrogen receptor acts as a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds estrogen, leading to dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA.
ER regulates gene transcription by recruiting coactivator or corepressor proteins.
Two receptor forms exist—alpha (ESR1) and beta (ESR2)—each encoded by separate genes.
At least four alpha isoforms (66, 53, 47, 35 kDa) are known due to alternative splicing.
ERs are widely expressed and play roles in sexual development, reproduction, bone physiology, and diseases such as breast and endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
