Target Information
The protein encoded by the FUK gene belongs to the GHMP (galacto-, homoserine, mevalonate, and phosphomevalonate) kinase family.
It catalyzes the phosphorylation of L-fucose to form β-L-fucose 1-phosphate, the first step in the utilization of free L-fucose in glycoprotein and glycolipid synthesis.
L-fucose may play roles in mediating cell-cell interactions such as blood group antigen recognition, inflammation, and metastasis.
Several transcript variants may exist, but only one full-length form has been described.
