Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits are composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
The RPL22 gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein that is part of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L22E family. Its initiating methionine residue is post-translationally removed.
The protein binds specifically to Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNAs (EBERs) 1 and 2 and can also bind to heparin in mice. Transcript variants with alternative polyA signals exist.
As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome.
This gene maps to 1p36.2, not 3q26 as previously thought.
