Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a virus that causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death. The CoV Spike (S) protein plays a key role in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a target for antibody, inhibitor, and vaccine development.
The Spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) binds strongly to human and bat angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors. SARS-CoV-2 RBD exhibits significantly higher binding affinity to ACE2 compared to SARS-CoV RBD. The S1 subunit contains the RBD that specifically interacts with ACE2 receptors on target cells.
