Target Information

CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein constitutively expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils.
It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor and is released into serum as both secreted and enzymatically cleaved forms.
CD14 binds LPS in a reaction catalyzed by lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP), an acute-phase serum protein.
The soluble form (sCD14) can distinguish structural differences between LPS molecules and contributes to neutralization of serum lipopolysaccharides.
Additionally, CD14 can bind apoptotic cells and influence allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same CD14 isoform.
Diseases associated with CD14 dysfunction include Mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
